The Tales from Aquis cover! I put this together in the Unreal Engine, which is the main engine I work with at the university. Had some fun sorting out lighting on all those structures. The book is mostly done at this point, it needs that final editing pass still. We're safe here at home, with the pandemic raging outside- and I have enjoyed the opportunity to go over personal projects that had been collecting too much dust.

We released a new trailer for The Missing Few- this one showing off some of the gameplay from the title. In addition to my responsibilities at the university, I'm also the lead 3D artist on this project on the side. Check it out: It is indeed true, the final version of the Civilization novel is complete. The original book was written in the form of weekly released chapters, which did lend itself to some issues, but with this final proof read and edit the book is now finally complete. The edited copy contains the following changes:
-Chapter artwork for each era. There are also some super cute little Babylonian lions used to separate subsections, which were previously just a centre-aligned dash. -General editing, tweaks to improve the flow of language, etc. A few slight expansions here and there, often a few sentences to round out scenes that were a little short. This also includes consistency for some terms, such as the old “hoverbike, hover-bike, hover bike” problem. -Formatting, including the addition of chapter banners and adjustment of margins, removal of unneeded double spaces, and general consistency throughout. There are more words per page with the adjustments. -Some names adjusted to include the proper accents and so forth, such as “Māori”. It's something I had been working on throughout the summer, now that I have had some time to myself. What's next for me? Tales from Aquis needs some love- I'll also be starting my Masters in Visual Communication (art) in a month, which I am rather looking forward to. So, until next time, folks! Enjoy the novel! Thought you folks might enjoy this- a breakdown of how the wonderful Phanuchanat Chareonsap and I put together the cover for The Clouds of Escalion. It’s been about six months since the second book launched, and I’m still overawed by the cover sometimes.
Here is our process- from tiny thumbnail in my omnipresent notebook to loose sketches and eventually final painting. Slightly attached to that notebook- in addition to the cover sketches for Escalion, it also contains pages and pages of notes from editing Children of the Crater in 2013, the as yet unreleased Tales from Aquis and a whole host of other illustrations.
A statue of Odin stands proudly in Dragon Creek. Been doing a few bits of random 3d artwork over the last month or so to buff out my portfolio, and thought I would show a bit of Children of the Crater related artwork.
Thought I would give a little peek at a project I was working on. While hunting down games design jobs, I thought it would be fun to build the Gem Temple from Steven Universe in 3D as a demonstration. The whole thing was set up in five days, using Unity 5. With the plugin, you could actually walk around it in-browser.
More screenshots over here. 2017 Edit: Unity depreciated the web plugin the following year, so the environment is no longer playable- but the screenshots are still up. A drawing from last night; Casimir III of Poland. My drawing seems to be really coming on! Working on some new Children of the Crater artwork as well at the minute, I will share that in a few days.
So, I’m a ridiculous fan of the Civilization franchise. Not really a New Year’s resolution per se, seeing as I started this project in late December, but I’ve been doing a sketch of a historical ruler each day to work on my drawing skills. I won’t spam you with every single one on here, but here are a few of my favourites from the last week:
From left to right we have Maria Theresa of Austria, Otto von Bismarck of Germany, and Theodora of the Byzantines. Imgur album with all the drawings, newest first, updated daily. I originally picked historical rulers if only because there are so many paintings and photographs, depending on era, to use as reference, and then decided that the playable rulers of the Civilization franchise were as good a set as any other to work with. It’s certainly helping my drawing! Been rather absorbed in The Wheel of Time recently, an excellent fantasy series by the late Robert Jordan. I thought I would share a work in progress painting I had been working on of the protagonist, Rand al’Thor. This is only a small chunk of a much larger painting, which I have been spending an inordinate amount of time on. The full version will have both Mat and Perrin in there as well; you can just about see the sketchy brim of Mat’s hat floating in the top corner.
